Long long ago, in China, the Jade Emperor wanted to net a easy method to count years, so someone suggested that they can capture 12 animals to recount the 12-year-cycle in lunar calendar, each for a year.

The Jade Emperor told the animals that the first 12 coming to the Palace would be the winners and they would each have a year of the zodiac named after them.
